James obtained his Master of Geography degree from the University of Otago in 1986. He has more than 38 years’ experience in environmental research, geodata and geospatial analysis in New Zealand and the Pacific. His focus has been on soils and landscapes, particularly in the high country and hill country. James has expertise in working with spatial datasets to address a wide range of issues in the New Zealand environment. His most recent publications include several Landcare Research contract reports and a Ministry of Primary Industries’ technical paper.
“I’ll be integrating the work of the electronics technicians and the soils and spatial modelling scientists to determine whether our approach can accurately estimate patterns at the farm-scale. If so, this would give farmers a detailed map to guide their selection of legumes. We also hope to demonstrate the value of near real-time predictions of temperature and moisture across the landscape, to support on-farm management decisions.”
