Hill country resilience classification system

Measures of natural capital

The 3 key achievements of this research to date:

  1. The development of a sampling strategy to assess earthworm communities in the hill country means this measure can be added to the comprehensive soil assessment protocol (developed in this programme) to enable assessment of the physical, chemical and biological components of soils in the hill country.
  2. Demonstration of how non-financial indicators (e.g. biodiversity, wellbeing) can be part of the collection and description of the whole landscape for inclusion in next-generation farm plans to capture the financial and the non-financial benefits (services) from farmed landscapes.
  3. Modelling using a research method (AgInform®) has shown the financial benefits of using lucerne. These results provide additional information that can be used to tell the ‘story’ of using lucerne in hill country.
